What actually moves a DJ quote
Two quotes for the same wedding can land far apart. Here is what drives the number.
- Hours on site. Ceremony coverage means an earlier load-in and usually a second sound system at the ceremony spot.
- What is bundled. Some quotes list ceremony audio, uplighting, and extra mics as add-ons. Ours includes them.
- Experience. A crew that has run 2,000+ events since 2006 prices differently than someone with a laptop and a weekend hobby.
- Backup gear and a bench. Redundant equipment and other DJs who can cover an emergency cost money to keep ready.
- The date. Peak-season Saturdays are the most contested dates in the state.
- Travel. We charge travel is calculated by service and the exact charge appears in your quote. Wherever you are, ask what travel adds before you compare quotes.
What should be included before you sign
At $1,650, here is what should already be in the package. If a quote comes in far below that, one of these is usually missing.
- Ceremony sound: wireless mics and speakers, so every vow is heard in the back row
- MC work: introductions, toasts, cake cutting, and timeline cues, all handled by your DJ
- A sound system sized to your room and guest count, not one speaker doing everything
- Dance lighting for the party and uplighting matched to your colors
- Online planning: must-plays, do-not-plays, and the full timeline set before load-in
- Backup equipment on site, every event
The cheap DJ trap
A Salem couple came to us after booking a bargain DJ. Two weeks before the wedding, no timeline existed and nobody had talked to the venue or the photographer. We hear a version of that story every season.
The low bid usually cuts the invisible work: planning calls, vendor coordination, backup gear, and a person who reads the room instead of running a playlist. The music is the visible part of the job. The rest is the part cheap quotes skip.
Three questions worth asking any DJ: Is ceremony audio included or extra? Do you bring backup gear? And is the person I am talking to the DJ who will actually show up?
How to pay less without a downgrade
There are real ways to spend less. None of them involve hiring the lowest bidder and hoping.
- Bundle. DJ plus any of our seven photo booths is $2,445 flat, and the booth runs the full six hours. Separate, that is $2,995, so the bundle saves $550.
- Stack more and save more. Photography plus film together saves $500. The Apogee Experience is $12,445 for DJ, booth, all-day photography, full film with drone, and full planning, a $1,935 saving vs $14,380 separate.
- Book early. There is no early-bird discount, but peak Saturdays go 12 to 18 months out, and scrambling late is how couples end up overpaying for whoever is left.
- Keep ceremony sound. Renting a separate PA and making your officiant fight with it costs more in stress than it saves in dollars.

The same crew has run dance floors at Zenith Vineyard, Green Villa Barn in Independence, West Hills Vineyard, the Salem Convention Center, and Black Butte Ranch out in Sisters. Big-city DJs tend to quote higher and small-town DJs lower, but neither number means much until you know what is in the package.
